How Do Heat Pumps Work?
Air Source Heat pumps deliver you low cost energy by extracting it from the air outside a building. This heat is pumped through a system which works like a refrigerator in reverse, delivering the heat though a heat exchanger based inside the building. Ground Source Heat Pumps work in much the same way as Air Source heat pumps, except that the heat is extracted from pipes buried in the ground.
Although the source of the energy is free, a small amount of power is needed to extract and pump it. Typically you will get out of a system 2.5 to 4 times the amount of energy put into it. Some heat pump sustems are also capable of working as air conditioning units in the summer time, delivering you a double benefit for your money.
