Meet a CCS Apprentice – A Change of Direction
Let's continue our journey through CCS by introducing Jamie Hill, an apprentice who is planning on going in a different direction with CCS.
Jamie Hill’s Q&A.
I prepared a few questions for Jamie to help us get to know him better both professionally and to gain some insight into his life outside of CCS.
You’ve been working as a Scheduler for CCS. How have you found that experience?
I really enjoy working here. The people are friendly, and I get along with everyone, including the managers, who are all great.
The work is good and manageable, though it can be challenging at times, like any job.
Overall, CCS is such a welcoming place to work, and I'm really enjoying it here.
What are the main challenges you face working in Operations?
Callers can sometimes be a bit direct, but I understand where their frustration comes from. Planning an engineer's day can also be tricky. I do my best to make their schedule as efficient as possible while meeting the needs of residents, but it can be a lot to manage, especially during busy periods.
Clear communication between planners and engineers is key to navigating the challenges we all face.
You're considering a change in direction within CCS. What inspired this shift in your career?
When I first joined, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. As I learned more about the engineers' roles, I realised that it’s something I’m really interested in. I asked if I could explore it further, and last week I had the chance to go out with an engineer. I really enjoyed the experience and now I’m excited about pursuing this path.
Who did you approach about the possibility of changing your career path at CCS?
I first spoke to my line manager, who then reached out to Michelle Vincent, our Head of Heating & Electrical. Michelle has been incredibly helpful and supportive, and she's eager to assist me in progressing.
How did people at CCS respond to your decision? Were they supportive, and did you face any challenges?
Everyone has been extremely supportive and willing to help me. There haven't been any obstacles in my way and people are genuinely happy to back my ambitions.
If someone at CCS is interested in exploring a different role, how should they go about it?
Be brave and start the conversation. Your line manager is the first person you should talk to. Honestly, they’ll support you and guide you in the right direction.
Anything else you'd like to add about your experience at CCS?
I just really enjoy working here. It’s a great place with amazing people, and I couldn’t ask for a better job, especially at 17 years old.

What music genre do you enjoy most?
I like a wide range of music, mostly from 2000 onwards. I don't have a specific favourite artist, but I do enjoy listening to artists like Stormzy.
What do you do outside of work? Any hobbies or activities you enjoy?
I love playing football. I'd definitely be interested in joining the CCS five-a-side team.
What's your favourite food?
If I get to choose a takeaway, it will 100% be Chinese.
Which has been your favourite country to visit?
Ibiza and Disneyland Paris.
Is there a dream destination you’d like to visit in the future?
It's a bit generic, but I'd really love to visit the USA.
Thanks to Jamie for taking the time to chat with me for this article.
