Test Your Heating Before the Colder Weather Arrives

As the weather starts to turn colder, now is a good time to give your heating a quick test and make sure everything is working as it should.

Checking your heating while the weather is still relatively mild can help you spot any issues before you begin relying on it every day. It may also give you the chance to resolve a simple problem yourself, without needing an engineer to visit.

A Quick Heating Check

You do not need to wait until the first really cold day to find out whether your heating is working properly.

Try these simple steps:

  • Make sure your heating is switched on
  • Turn your thermostat up until the heating clicks on, or set it higher than the current room temperature
  • Make sure the thermostats on the radiators are turned up
  • Leave your heating running for around 10–20 minutes
  • Check that your radiators, where applicable, are warming up evenly

If everything is working as expected, you can switch your heating back to your usual settings.

Something Not Quite Right?

If your heating does not come on, a radiator is not warming up properly, or something else does not seem right, there may be a simple solution.

Before reporting the issue, take a look at our Help pages:

Our Help pages include safe and easy steps you can try yourself. In some cases, a quick check or simple adjustment could get your heating working again and avoid the need for an engineer visit.

Only carry out checks you are comfortable with and that are covered by the guidance provided. Never attempt to remove covers, interfere with gas appliances or carry out repairs yourself.

Still Having a Problem?

If you have tried the relevant steps on our Help pages and the problem remains, please contact your landlord for further support.

They will be able to advise on the next steps and arrange further assistance where required.

Beat the Chill Before It Arrives

A few minutes spent checking your heating now could help prevent an unexpected problem when temperatures drop.

Testing it early gives you more time to identify any issues, try simple fixes where appropriate and make sure your home is ready for the colder months ahead.
