Job Purpose:
We are seeking a qualified and experienced Electrical Test Engineers to conduct Periodic Inspection and Testing (PIT) of electrical installations in accordance with BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 (IET Wiring Regulations). The successful candidate must have a strong understanding of Electrical Installation Condition Reporting (EICR), particularly the identification and classification of C1 (Danger Present), C2 (Potentially Dangerous), and C3 (Improvement Recommended) defects as per IET Guidance Note 3 (Inspection & Testing).
The engineer must also ensure that all C1 and C2 remedials are completed on-site during the inspection visit. Additionally, expertise in the installation, replacement, and testing of Aico smoke and heat alarms in compliance with BS 5839-6:2019+A1:2020 (Code of Practice for Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems in Domestic Premises) to LD1 D3 specification is required.

Full Job Description
Key Responsibilities
Inspection & Testing Responsibilities:
- Perform Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) in compliance with BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 and IET Guidance Note 3.
- Conduct visual and functional inspections, followed by dead and live testing, including:
- Continuity of Protective Conductors (R1+R2, R2, R1 tests)
- Insulation Resistance Tests
- Polarity Checks
- Earth Fault Loop Impedance (Zs, Ze) Tests
- Prospective Fault Current (PFC, PSC) Measurements
- RCD Testing (30mA, 100mA, 300mA) for Type AC, A, F, and B RCDs
- Functional Testing of AFDDs (Arc Fault Detection Devices), SPDs (Surge Protective Devices), and RCBOs
- Identify and code electrical defects per IET and NICEIC guidelines:
- C1 – Danger Present: Immediate risk of electric shock or fire. Requires urgent disconnection or repair.
- C2 – Potentially Dangerous: Could become hazardous if left unaddressed. Requires urgent rectification.
- C3 – Improvement Recommended: Not an immediate risk but should be improved for compliance.
Remedial Works & Compliance:
- Immediately rectify all C1 and C2 defects on the day of testing, ensuring electrical safety compliance.
- Carry out electrical remedial works such as:
- Consumer unit (CU) replacements to BS EN 61439-3
- Upgrading protective devices (RCDs, RCBOs, AFDDs, SPDs) as per Amendment 2 of BS 7671
- Earthing and bonding upgrades to BS 7671 Section 544
- Rewiring or corrective actions for non-compliant circuits
- Fire-rated cable installations per BS 7671 and BS 8519:2020
Aico Smoke Alarm Installation (BS 5839-6:2019+A1:2020)
- Install, replace, and interconnect Aico smoke, heat, and CO alarms following LD1 D3 specification, ensuring:
- Coverage in all habitable rooms, circulation areas, and high-risk locations as required allocation dependant.
- Use of Grade D1 alarms (sealed lithium battery backup, mains-powered)
- Correct zoning, siting, and interlinking of alarms to meet compliance
- Full function testing and commissioning with documentation
Documentation & Reporting:
- Accurately complete and certify reports:
- EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) per NICEIC format
- Minor Works and Electrical Installation Certificates as per BS 7671 requirements
- Smoke alarm installation certificates for compliance with BS 5839-6
- Use appropriate calibrated test instruments (e.g., Megger, Fluke, Kewtech) and maintain test records.
- Communicate effectively with clients, landlords, and compliance teams regarding testing outcomes and remedial work requirements.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
- Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrical Installation (City & Guilds 2357/2365) or equivalent.
- City & Guilds 2391-52 (Inspection & Testing) or 2394/2395.
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2018+A2:2022) certification.
- Strong knowledge of IET Guidance Note 3, NICEIC & NAPIT EICR coding guidelines.
- Experience conducting EICRs and remedial works in domestic and commercial properties.
- Familiarity with Aico SmartLINK technology and BS 5839-6 smoke alarm installation requirements.
- Full UK driving license.
Desirable:
- City & Guilds 2377 (PAT Testing).
- Experience with electrical vehicle (EV) charger installations (BS 7671 Section 722).
- Experience working with HMO fire safety compliance.
- PASMA/IPAF certifications for working at height.
- Solar / renewable experience (BPEC)
- DMEV / MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery) experience advantageous
